As of December 2019, we are facing a global pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV2 virus. As stated by the WHO, the "3T" strategy (Test, Track and Treat) remains the best procedure in the fight against COVID19. To date, diagnostics make it possible to establish positivity to the infection in the nasopharynx, but scientific data show that negativized subjects and in the absence of respiratory symptoms present the virus in other parts of the body. The hypothesis that the virus can infect other tissues, other than the respiratory one, suggests that the virus remains inside the organism in a "latent" condition, awaiting a subsequent "reactivation" and with a risk of transmission of the elevated infection.
Our research activity is aimed at identifying the areas of the body in which the SARS-CoV2 virus "lurks", in order to define the best systems for identifying subjects positive for infection, which include, for example, rectal swab, analysis of stool and urinalysis.
This will allow the infection to be detected more accurately in subjects with symptoms not strictly characteristic of COVID19, but who may have a "latent" positivity to the virus.
